{"id":843,"date":"2010-07-02T11:27:04","date_gmt":"2010-07-02T10:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/monachus-guardian.org\/wordpress\/?p=843"},"modified":"2010-07-20T12:23:11","modified_gmt":"2010-07-20T11:23:11","slug":"an-epidemic-of-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monachus-guardian.org\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/02\/an-epidemic-of-killings\/","title":{"rendered":"An epidemic of killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Editorial, The Monachus Guardian, June 2010<\/h5>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.monachus-guardian.org\/images25\/2502_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" \/>It is hard to imagine anyone not being moved by the tragic tale of \u2018Markos\u2019 \u2013 the young Mediterranean monk seal who was brought into intensive care, struggling for life, but horribly mutilated by the bullet that shattered his jaw and nasal cavity.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly it was a blessing in disguise that, despite the valiant attempts to save him, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, for it seemed doubtful that he would ever swim, dive, or grace the Aegean again.<\/p>\n<p>The killing of monk seals in Greece, according to national NGO MOm, is reaching \u201cepidemic proportions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation has recorded 15 deaths since January, 5 of which yielded conclusive evidence of deliberate killing. Another killing by gunfire was reported in Turkey on the Bodrum peninsula on 21 April.
